The Spittoon List!

We’re are very excited to present The Spittoon List, a weekly vlog featuring adventures in geekery. Conventions, games, dares – think of it as our not-so-mature bucket list.

We’re even more excited to launch the vlog with two videos this weekend. The first is a special music video of the International Steampunk Symposium, complete with music by AUTOMATON. Second is a smaller-scale adventure, where we learn about DEDing.

Next week we might have another double feature where Melissa and I give proper introductions to both The Spittoon List and ourselves.

Have something you think we should add to our Spittoon List? Be sure to tell us in the comments!

Long Week

You remember the excuses from last week? I’m still using them. Convention, and official duties, and costuming – oh my! I am scheduling my highlight photos of the weekend for tomorrow, Ish. And I will be posting A VERY SPECIAL POLL this weekend, so stay tuned.

And I have some lovely shots of the roses I made in action. Thanks to Missy for the pictures. Check them out!

Steampunk Empire Symposium!

We’re nearing the cut-off date for the discounted early bird tickets for the 2015 Steampunk Empire Symposium.

If you’ve never been to a con, this is a good place to get your feet wet. If you’ve been to so many cons you’re getting jaded, this is a good place to restore your faith in geekery. Full of friendly and enterprising folks from all across the country, this convention was voted the best steampunk convention in the Midwest. There are events for everyone. I’m talking dirigible races to dances, tea dueling to nerf dueling, film screenings to convention-wide bounty hunts. There is even a special track for writers. Every year, there’s something new and different.

This year’s guests of honor include New York Times Bestselling author Gail Carriger, the legendary Diana M. Pho (Ay-Leen the Peacemaker), Thomas Willeford, and many, many more.

Yours truly will be present in some capacity, possibly on a panel. Running about causing mayhem, at the very least.

It will be a weekend to remember! Join us!

The Next Con

No, I am not trying to rip anyone off.

But I will be going to the Steampunk Empire Symposium this April by hook or by crook. The theme this year is “Steam Wars,” and – no – that doesn’t mean the whole con takes place in a shower.

There will be nerdiness. There will be mayhem. There will be fundraising.

And there will be lightsabers.

I just started gathering pieces for my costume (fairly required at steampunk events), which meant I found myself walking out of Meijer with a bottle of motor oil, a toy lightsaber, and a bottle of Bailey’s. To be fair, it was two days before St. Pat’s.

Anyway! This con promises to be great fun, as the Empire Symposium generally is, and I’m looking forward to a stand-off between the TWO steampunk Boba Fetts, who will be competing against each other in some fashion during the convention.

And, of course, there will be the standard steampunk fare, such as tea dueling, panels, workshops, and lots of tempting vendors.

I will post project updates as I finish key elements of my attire. Yes, I do have plans for that lightsaber.

Pandoracon!

I could rave about this convention for hours (and I kinda have), but a picture is supposed to worth a thousand words, so I’ll let them speak for me this evening. Apologies for some of the quality. My camera doesn’t like the middle-light of indoor events, so some shots aren’t as clear as I’d like. I did manage to get one or two really good photos, though. I also captured some fantastic video, but I’m saving that for a surprise that will be unveiled… later this week… or early next… we’ll see what happens.

And now… Steampunks, and pirates, and Labyrinths, huzzah!

Enjoy!

The Pandora Society – Strange & Beautiful Events for Cincinnati & Beyond | About Pandoracon

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, I spend a lot of time in Cincinnati, Ohio. It’s always been a good place for the arts, but in the past few years it’s become a tremendous place for nerds, and that is due in large part to the efforts of the Pandora Society.

You know that masquerade I posed about several weeks ago? That was a Pandora Society event. They host monthly steampunk salons at an atmospheric pub downtown, and every year they hold two major conventions. The first, in the spring, is the Steampunk Empire Symposium – which, if you’ve been following for a while, you’ve also seen photos of that event as well. The second event is in the fall – Pandoracon.

What makes Pandoracon special is the level of interaction it promotes. Con goers are divided into Houses – Diamonds, Clubs, Spades, and Hearts. These Houses are led by Kings and Queens chosen during the Midsummer Masquerade, and compete against each other in games, tournaments and contests over the entire weekend.

Pandoracon is also a themed convention. Last year, the theme was Doctor Who. This year, the theme is derived from the ’80s cult classic, Labyrinth. In honor of the theme, not only is a real life labyrinth being constructed, but a special House has been founded – goblins! The goblins’ goal is to cause mischief and mayhem, interfering with the other Houses as they embark on a quest to discover the name of the Goblin King.

It’s great fun, and a truly unique experience. This year, the convention will be held from October 11th through October 13th. It’s well worth the trip, I assure you!

Gerehaken’s SCA and Steampunk creations by SteampunkandSCA on Etsy

Every great costume is based on a good character – either an original creation, or one borrowed from film, literature, or television. Cosplayers know this. Steampunks know this. It’s the first thing you learn at costume panels. Great characters are usually made in the details.

Steampunks, who usually make their own unique characters to serve as their steampunk ‘personas’ know this very well. We look for functionality as well as originality and aesthetic grace. We want to be something different, or at least bring a different twist to an old theme.

I found these marvelous creations by Dr. Gerehaken.

These are perfect additions to a lot of different costumes. Obviously, they’re handy for a mad scientist, but they could also be chemicals for an airship mechanic, a doctor’s tonics, or a monster hunter’s holy water and garlic.

There are a number of great items on this artist’s Etsy, and I highly recommend checking it out before your next con.
